Garden Asheville

Hard not to be lulled into a false sense of security when the temps soar into the 70s in late February but by my check the last average frost date in Asheville is April 10, give 10 days one side or the other of it.

I decided to look up a more comprehensive list from the NC Extension site. Here you go, plan accordingly:

Asheville April 10
Bent Creek area May 5
Black Mountain April 27
Brevard  May 3
Canton  May 4
Celo  May 18
Enka community April 21
Hendersonville April 26
Highlands  April 25
Hot Springs April 21
Marshall April 29
Waynesville May 7

I live in Weaverville, and to my experience is between May 1 and May 10.  So your second list seems more accurate.  The date for Asheville should be taken with a grain of salt, as that looks more like downtown Asheville with lots of concrete and buildings skewing the date earlier than, say, in Kennilworth.

You are right about the Asheville date. Lots of microclimates in the city, and I'm lucky to live in one.

I have friends in Weaverville and the get tons more snow than Asheville, so it stands to reason that the last frost date would be later. I wonder why the list does not include Weaverville or Barnardsville, for example. I bet if you go over into Madison County those numbers would be more accurate for your area.

Polly,

The weatherbug app on my smart phone tells me that we are under a frost warning for tonight, May 4.  Pretty much confirms your data above.
